The gap nobody warns you about

Three months with no coverage, and a parent who needs help now.

New permanent residents in Ontario usually wait about three months before OHIP starts. Families plan for the flights, the paperwork and the winter coats. Almost nobody plans for the stretch where a mother with a bad hip has no provincial coverage and no family doctor yet.

That window is where most of our newcomer calls come from. A parent lands, the jet lag wears off, and it becomes obvious that the stairs are a problem, or the medications from back home do not match what the pharmacy here recognises, or that nobody in the household can be home between nine and five.

The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) exists for people who are not yet OHIP-covered — resettled refugees, refugee claimants and certain other groups. Depending on status and what has been approved, home and personal care can fall within that coverage. It is not automatic and it is not universal, which is why we check rather than promise.

If IFHP does not apply to your family, that is not the end of the conversation. It is the start of a different one. See every route we check →

How we work with newcomer families

Care that does not require you to explain your own household.

A caregiver who shares your parent’s language does not need the family to translate a symptom, and your parent does not have to perform being fine in a second language. That is the whole difference in the first week.

We also know the practical shape of a newly arrived household: the adult children working opposite shifts, the grandchild doing the interpreting, the relative back home who expects a daily update. Your care manager writes the plan around that, not around a template. See how it works →

What it costs

Funding first. Then a written quote.

We do not publish an hourly rate, because what you pay depends on the visit, the care and above all on whether a program covers it. So we check that first, free, before quoting anything. Most families qualify through more routes than they expect. Anything a program does not cover is quoted in writing before care begins.

Newcomer questions

What newcomer families ask us.

It may. IFHP covers eligible people who are not yet covered by OHIP, including resettled refugees, refugee claimants and certain other groups. Home and personal care can fall within supplemental coverage depending on the person's status and what has been approved. We check your situation free on the first call and tell you honestly what we think applies.
Often yes. The three-month OHIP wait is exactly the window IFHP and private arrangements are meant to bridge. Care can begin in as little as 24 to 48 hours while coverage is being confirmed, and we tell you before care starts what is settled and what is still pending.
We match your family's language when a suitable caregiver is available and confirm current availability on the first call. Our caregiver network includes Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, French and Mandarin speakers alongside English.
Then we check everything else, at no cost. Public funding through Ontario Health atHome, Family-Managed Home Care, extended benefits through work or retirement, and auto-insurance or WSIB coverage where an accident or injury is involved. There is usually more than one route worth testing.
When coverage is approved, yes. We bill the program rather than sending you a bill to claim back, so your out-of-pocket cost may be little or $0.

Care can begin in as little as 24 to 48 hours.

A complimentary consultation at home or by phone, in your family's language. No pressure, no obligation.
